Remember, you’re the Cosmetologist. . . Hair doesn’t stop at the scalp! Neither do your profits!

If you think your salon has “maxed” out in profits . . . think again! It may just be a matter of incorporating and merchandising a new salon basic. Let’s talk Waxing!

How many times has your phone rung with the inquiry, “Do you offer waxing”? A major source of income for estheticians, but yet very overlooked by the cosmetologist, waxing truly is the “forgotten” add-on service.

Your hair design is to the face, what a frame is to a painting! Yet, there is nothing more disturbing after a really good cut to see ungroomed brows, a hairy neckline or bushy ears! (bet that got a chuckle!)

Waxing, the art of removing hair to leave the skin smooth and stubble free with slow re-growth, is the most common method of removing unwanted hair in the salon. Waxing requires a minimal investment, no additional space is required and only minutes of added service time.

So how do you begin?

1) Invest in a really good complete wax system.

2) Become educated. Learn fast, safe methods of hair removal.

3) Have a wax pot at your shampoo or styling station on at all times.

4) ASK..ASK…ASK! You must learn to ask all female clients who have scheduled hair service if they would like their brows and lips waxed. Men? Recommend “grooming” their brows and napes!

What type of increase in revenue can waxing bring to the salon?

Using the most popular menu item; Eyebrow Shaping, I’ll share an example:

Approx. Cost of Tin of Wax: $13.60

Approx. Number of Services per Tin: 30

Fee Charged for Service: $15.00

Revenue Per Tin! $436.40

When you develop the knowledge and skills for this much needed service, you also develop a loyal and growing clientele. Get over any fear you may have of waxing and become successful in this lucrative area of our cosmetology industry!

Some Tips

  • Market your waxing services – don’t just list waxing on your service menu.
  • Make client wax information available in your lounge & waiting areas.
  • Educate your entire staff to perform waxing services (per individual license)
  • Stylists – lips, brows, chins, nape of neck!
  • Manicures/Pedicures – wax fingers & toes!
  • And … don’t forget to wax yourself!
